Reading to the young and the young at heart October 16, 2022 – Posted in: Blog, Books, Thoughts
You know I started this journey with Niki as I like reading and have spent many hours reading both to my own children but also to my grandkids. It was one of the special things I enjoyed when they were young I have an old book about mythology and also has lessons to be learned section. The stories often left them thinking about the morals of the story or the myths that people believed but more importantly it opened their minds to different things. These stories always intrigued them. It paid off too, my kids love to read and we often used to pass books back and forth to each other after we have finished them unfortunately I don’t buy books I have a kindle so rarely do I have a book. I read around a book a month and if it is good I have been known to read it overnight and not sleep.
Reading aloud with young children, even if they can’t fully understand what you are saying, gives them the skills they need for when they begin to read by themselves. It shows children that reading is something achieved by focusing from left to right and that turning pages is essential for continuing. Reading to children in even the earliest months of their lives can help with language acquisition and stimulating the part of the brain that processes language.
For me one of the aspects I liked when reading to my family was the semblance of closeness as I often only got home at bedtime so it was special time sometimes with each one and sometimes all 3 it simply was a time with Dad. My daughter when she had her own kids would suggest that I read stories to them as I used to and I pulled that old book out again. I hope one day it will be used for my Great grandchildren.
Our books have helped parents explain the goings on of the world to their children whether it be the difference of skin to the visit to a hospital to their first day at school our books have helped. How do I know this? Well I have been told by may readers. Ollie’s Tonsils has been a number 1 best seller a number of times over the last 5 years and still is read in many homes. It is a bit whimsical, and we have updated it slightly to reflect more modern hospitals but in essence it has the same message that hospitals needn’t be scary places. Have a look around our site and see if our books can help you and our children with comparing insights.
